These pictures were taken by my dad. The first is a baseball game at Camden Yards, the second is of me standing in front of the Space Shuttle Enterprise, and the third's a rock wall at a nearby reservoir. I bet if you were really smart, you could find a way to make these descriptions appear when you mouse over each image... or even make it so that zooming in on one image restores the rest to thumbnail size.
Update: a bunch of folks have sent in their own takes on this technique.

Aaron Costello has a version that zooms the photos in place and dims the rest of the page, sort of similar to lightbox.js.
-
Michel Koning came up with a version that automatically scales down other images on the page when you click one, ensuring that only one is maximized at a time. I have my own take on this idea that's a little bit more concise, but they both work great.

Lyle Konkiel made a version that validates perfectly -- this page adopts some of his advice, in fact.
-
David McGuire was the first of many to make the effect work when you move your mouse over an image instead of clicking.
(? other interesting stuff?)
